What we expect
What we offer
A Typical Day at The Pimenta
Life at The Pimenta follows the natural rhythm of the garden, the kitchen, and our guests. Every day is slightly different, depending on the season, the retreat programme, and the interests of our volunteers.
Begin the morning with tea or coffee, fresh air, and time to enjoy the gardens. Volunteers may help with simple morning routines around the house and garden.
Breakfast is followed by a few hours of practical work. This could include tending the spice and vegetable gardens, composting, watering plants, preparing guest spaces, organizing the library, or helping with housekeeping.
The kitchen comes alive with preparation for the day. Volunteers may observe or assist with traditional Kerala vegetarian and vegan cooking, spice preparation, recipe documentation, or hands-on cooking sessions with guests.
Share a relaxed meal and take some time to rest, read, explore the garden, or simply enjoy the quiet surroundings.
Afternoons are usually dedicated to the volunteer's chosen area of contribution. This might mean working on the library and archives, documenting recipes, helping with a garden project, preparing materials for a cooking programme, or assisting with guest activities.
Take a break for tea and conversation. Depending on the day, volunteers may accompany guests on a village walk, visit a local artisan, explore the neighbourhood, or help prepare for a cultural evening.
Evenings are relaxed. There may be a cooking session, conversations around the long table, recipe discussions, reading, or simply time to unwind in the garden.
A new recipe discovered, a conversation with a local farmer, picking fresh spices from the garden, helping a guest master a Kerala dish, or learning something that was never part of the plan.
At The Pimenta, volunteering is not about following a rigid timetable. It is about participating, learning, sharing your skills, and becoming part of the everyday life of a Kerala spice garden.
Send us a note about yourself, your background, your skills, and when you would like to join our volunteer family.
